200 Technasium students accepted a challenge from the Noorderzijlvest water board, but which fish hotel will be located in the Paterswoldsemeer?

At the start of the school year, 200 second-year Technasium students were challenged by the Noorderzijlvest water board. Design a fishing hotel for the Paterswoldsemeer and ensure that this hotel is also ‘visible’ above water. The ten best designs can be viewed at the Wall House between 8 and 10 March.

The construction of fish hotels is one of the measures taken by the water board to improve the (ecological) water quality of the lake. At the moment the lake has too few hiding and spawning places for fish and small water creatures. The water board creates nature-friendly banks. In addition, fish hotels also provide an ecological improvement.

For a trimester, students from RSG De Borgen, the Praedinius Gymnasium and the City Lyceum worked on their designs. Visitors to the Wall House can vote for their favorite fishing hotel. You can also vote online. A jury of experts will also choose a favourite. The two winning designs are actually implemented as far as feasible.

Creative

‘We worked very creatively,’ says Annemieke van der Lans, education officer at the Noorderzijlvest water board. ‘You can clearly see that good preliminary research has been done. And at the same time, the students are little inhibited by what is not possible. They mainly see what is possible. That results in very original designs.’

The designs have been developed into scale models. These are exhibited in the Wall House, which is located directly on the Paterswoldsemeer. On Tuesday 8 March, Wednesday 9 March or Thursday 10 March between 12:00 and 17:00, visitors can come and have a look at registration. Due to fire regulations, a maximum of 30 people can be in the Wall House at the same time.

All designs will also be online from March 7th each with a short film on the project’s website: voting can be done via an online voting form. The award ceremony will take place on 11 March to the two winning teams (professional jury and the public award).
