20 years concert hall Bruges

Today it is the first and only time that the art video is performed live, with an audience. The silent film shows life in an alley like there were many in 1900. Claerbouts does this by combining video and sound art. De Kortrijkzaan created the visual and sound artwork for the Concertgebouw.

The new artwork is now part of the extensive art collection that is open to the public.

On Thursday, the concert hall that celebrates its birthday will be visited by Queen Mathilde. Twenty years ago, when Bruges became European capital of culture, the king and queen also came to visit. Former mayor Patrick Moenaert has beautiful memories of it.

On 20 February 2002 at two past eight, the city of Bruges celebrated that it was awarded the title of ‘European Capital of Culture’. That happened with a concert in the brand new Concertgebouw op het Zand.

It is thanks to this title that the Concertgebouw was built. The building is a design by architects Robbrecht and Daem, which is internationally acclaimed.
