26th matchday
Holstein Kiel has finally arrived back in the relegation battle in the 2nd Bundesliga. Last year’s third-placed lost a spectacular northern duel at FC Hansa Rostock 2-3 (0-1) on Friday evening. Due to the fourth defeat in a row, Marcel Rapp’s team was overtaken in the table by the promoted team.
The Rostockers took the lead three times through Pascal Breier (4th), John Verhoek (68th) and Hanno Behrens (81st, photo). Alexander Mühling (50th) and an own goal by Calogero Rizzuto (71st) brought Kiel back twice. The goal to make it 1-1 was particularly strange. Because Mühling headed at the goal from a short distance, defender Damian Roßbach’s attempt at clearance hit the lower edge of the crossbar, the Rostock counterattack continued – before referee Lasse Koslowski decided a goal for Kiel after a tip from the video assistant.
Holstein was visually superior in the first half. For a long time, however, the guests were missing Rostock’s determination and goal threat. In the second half, the Kielers were the significantly better team, at least up to 1:2. In the exciting final phase, however, Hansa had more to gain.

Late Kutucu goal saves SV Sandhausen point at Darmstadt 98
Small setback for second division team SV Darmstadt 98 in the battle for promotion: The Hessians only drew 1-1 (1-0) against relegation candidate SV Sandhausen in their own stadium on Friday evening. They have taken the lead in the standings for the time being, but can still drop back to third place by Sunday. Aaron Seydel (17th minute) scored the goal for the lilies in front of 11,296 spectators at Böllenfalltor, Ahmed Kutucu (84th) equalized late for the guests from Sandhausen. The Darmstadt team took nine points from the past five games.
After a tough start, Seydel set the first exclamation point for the south Hesse team with a shot from the left side of the penalty area at the left crossbar (13′). A short time later, the striker provided the opening goal. But Sandhausen didn’t give up and secured an important point in the relegation battle with great morale. Joker Kutucu, who had only just come into play, completed safely after a cross from the right. Alois Schwartz’s team now has 30 points.
