Bremen, without defeat away from home, moved up to fourth place in the table for at least a day and thus also overtook Hoffenheim.

Skov brings instant momentum

Werder Bremen changed the jersey color from green to salmon compared to the 5-1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach, but the starting eleven remained the same. At Hoffenheim, coach André Breitenreiter relied on Robert Skov instead of Pavel Kadeřábek after the 1-1 draw at Hertha BSC.

The move worked well, with Skov making promising runs down the right flank in the first few minutes. However, both of his shots rolled wide of the left post.

Hoffenheim remained the more active and better team afterwards. But the guests showed why they had previously scored twelve points from eight games as a promoted team.

Filling jug in a double pass with Ducksch

They also took the lead and again that involved someone who had been much talked about and written about the previous week. Should national coach Hansi Flick take striker Niclas Füllkrug with him to the World Cup, who leads the World Cup scorers list with seven goals? That was the question discussed, and it continues to correct itself.

However, it could be expanded to include the aspect of whether Marvin Ducksch should also come along. In any case, the two Bremen strikers get along splendidly. That became clear with Werder’s opening goal, which Ducksch scored with a well-considered low shot into the corner after a one-two with a jug (18′).

Dabbur scores to equalize

Ducksch would have preferred not to be involved in the second goal of the evening. But it was he who initiated the counterattack, which Munas Dabbur completed with a lob over Jiří Pavlenka to make it 1-1 (32′).

The game provided good entertainment for the 20,000 spectators in the first half, and that remained the case after the break. Again a Hoffenheimer had the first two chances, this time it was Christoph Baumgartner. His first shot missed, the second was blocked by Pavlenka.

Vogt’s straddle in dire need

The level dropped in the last half hour of the game, but the willingness of both teams to take three points was evident. Bremen came close to victory for the first time when Ducksch finished after a counterattack in the penalty area. Kevin Vogt blocked the ball with a tackle (79′).

A tackle against Mitchell Weiser was fatal for Stanley N’Soki, because the man from Bremen fell after he had run one step after the contact. Referee Benjamin Cortus let the game continue, but then looked at the scene on the monitor and awarded a penalty. This is how Füllkrug scored the eighth goal of the season. Hansi Flick saw him live in the stadium.
