As of: 09/16/2022 9:31 p.m

The opening game of the women’s Bundesliga between Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayern Munich had no winner – but a new attendance record. 23,200 fans found their way to the Frankfurt stadium on Friday evening (September 16, 2022), shattering the old record of 12,464 fans.

Against this impressive backdrop, however, no goals were scored. The top game between two very ambitious teams ended 0-0 – a respectable success for Eintracht. Before the kick-off, the vice European champions involved in the game were honored.

The previous attendance record in the league was 12,464 spectators in Wolfsburg (June 2014). “That’s just Frankfurt. But the girls deserve it too”said Eintracht sports director Markus Krösche at Eurosport before the game, looking at the biggest Bundesliga backdrop so far.

Frankfurt more active, Bavaria somewhat disappointing

Both teams struggled on the field in the first half in front of the national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, chances remained scarce. Bayern Munich under new coach Alexander Straus disappointed after the break, Eintracht made a more active impression. The attacking trio with Lea Schüller, Lina Magull and Klara Bühl had a hard time against the convincing Frankfurt women. After a mistake by Sjoeke Nüsken, Magull missed the huge opportunity to take the lead (48th). On the other side, Lara Prasnikar (67th) and Geraldine Reuteler (77th) failed to goalkeeper Maria-Luisa Grohs in a passionate and high-class game, but for a long time there were few goal chances.

The goal for this season is clear: The momentum from the successful European Championships in England should be taken into everyday life, with the start on the big stage a trend-setting signal should be set. Double winners VfL Wolfsburg with DFB captain Alexandra Popp will start the new season against SGS Essen on Saturday.
