In top 15 leagues including cups
Cody Gakpo has become the first player this season to have both goals and assists in double digits. The winger from PSV Eindhoven pulled off a brace in the 5-1 win at FC Zurich on Thursday evening in the Europa League (21st/55th minute) and also prepared another goal, giving the 23-year-old a total of twelve goals and ten assists in 15 games.
A look at the TM database reveals: In a comparison of the top 15 leagues including all national and international cup competitions, only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (22) also has this scorer value. The 60 million new signing does not have the same balance as Gakpo, he has scored 19 goals and three assists so far – but he only needed twelve appearances for that. Neymar (30) from Paris Saint-Germain also breaks the mark of 20 scorers.
Nevertheless, Gakpo was not happy after his performance and the sovereign victory. “We were good but there is still room for improvement. We got sloppy in the second half,” summed up the nine-time Dutch international. “In the end we got another goal, nobody is happy with that. In such duels you have to show that you can keep the clean sheet.”
Gakpo Eredivisie 2nd Most Valuable – Unsuccessful attempts at poaching in summer
Gakpo was among the big winners in the most recent interim update in the Eredivisie, earning an increase from €30m to €35m, making him the second most valuable professional in the league. Dubbed “Ein-tovenaa” by fans, tovenaar means magician, had kept all options open in the past transfer period. It was only on the final day that both he and PSV declared he was staying. Attempts by several Premier League clubs such as Leeds, Southampton and Man United to poach him were unsuccessful. The sums of around 30 million euros that were rumored to be offered could not persuade PSV to part with the home-grown player.
