1908 Harley-Davidson sells for record price at auction | Abroad

The so-called ‘Strap Tank’ Harley-Davidson was up for auction last month at the Mecum Auction in Las Vegas, it reported The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Friday. The motorcycle looks more like a bicycle than a motorcycle in appearance.

The engine got the name Strap Tank because the oil and fuel tanks are strapped to the frame. It is believed that there are only 12 copies of the model in question in the whole world. The auctioned engine also had many original parts, which made it even more rare, says Greg Arnold, head of engines at Mecum Auctions.

“We marketed the bike well and Harley is by far the best-known American motorcycle brand, so we had a feeling that this one would score well at auction, but of course you are always surprised when you sell the most expensive bike ever.” ‘ said Arnold.

Even Elvis Presley’s 1976 Harley-Davidson, which was auctioned in 2019, fetched less, at $800,000. The most expensive motorcycle to date was a 1951 Vincent Black Lightning, which Australian Jake Ehret set a speed record in 1954. This motorcycle was auctioned in 2018 for $929,000.
