19-year-old Alkmaarder arrested for explosive in car on Ruysdaelkade

The driver of a black Volkswagen Polo who was arrested yesterday on Ruysdaelkade in Alkmaar for possessing explosives is a 19-year-old Alkmaarder. The suspect is in restriction, which means that he is only allowed to have contact with his lawyer.

The investigation into the suspect’s motive is in full swing, the police reported to NH Nieuws. They cannot provide further information at this time.

Traffic control

During a traffic control on the Ruysdaelkade, the 19-year-old driver of a black Volkswagen Polo was stopped yesterday afternoon around 12.30 pm. Police said the man appeared “nervous and nervous.” That was reason to search his car.

The police then found what they suspected to be possible explosives and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD) was called in. The street was cordoned off and local residents were asked to remain in the rear of their house as a precaution.

Packages of heavy explosives

At around 4:50 p.m., police said the explosives had been secured. It turned out to be ‘several packages of heavy explosives’. “Really of a different order than illegal fireworks,” said police spokesman Erwin Sintenie.

Residents were then allowed to leave their homes. Although local residents earlier that day sober reactedthey were shocked when it turned out that’s serious was: “Most people were not very upset here, but this is something completely different”, one of them responds to NH Nieuws.

It is not yet known what explosives were in the black Volkswagen Polo. The explosives were sampled and destroyed in a safe environment. It is also unknown why the driver had the explosives in the car. “We are conducting further investigations for this and we are going to talk to the suspect,” Sintenie said.
