171st traditional ‘dog swimming’ in Sint-Baafs-Vijve

As soon as the flag goes down, the dogs sprint to the water. The animals without fear of water jump immediately and swim as fast as they can to the other side. But many dogs are hesitant to jump or find it safer to return to the starting spot.

The event is a piece of folklore and heritage, because dog swimming is unique in Flanders. Owners come to test beforehand whether the dog will cut a good figure.

Every year, about 60 to 70 participants write their dogs in the hope of gaining eternal fame in Sint-Baafs-Vijve.
