Former national coach of Argentina
The traditional Brazilian club Flamengo Rio de Janeiro has signed former Argentina national coach Jorge Sampaoli as their new coach. The 63-year-old has a contract until December 31, 2024, the reigning Copa Libertadores winner announced. The Brazilian Série A starts this weekend with the first matchday.
Sampaoli had been coaching Sevilla FC until just under a month ago. However, he had failed to take the six-time European Cup winners out of the bottom half of the table. The Argentinian only replaced Julen Lopetegui in October last year and had to leave after just 31 games and a points average of 1.45.
Flamengo is Sampaoli’s 16th stop in his career. After an injury as a player, he began his tenure on the bench aged 27 in Argentina. From 2012 to 2016 he coached the Chile team, which he led to their first Copa America title in 2015. From 2017 to 2018 he was Argentina’s national coach, later he coached FC Santos and Atlético Mineiro in Brazil and Olympique Marseille in Europe before finally moving to Seville.
