The process of the claim for damages by ice skating runner Claudia Pechstein as a result of her doping lock in 2009 has ended.
This was announced on Monday Matthias Große, negotiator of the Pechstein team and partner of the 53-year-old. Große explained that the “Pechstein case on February 27, 2025 has found a clear and conciliatory end after over 16 years. The official announcement is made in prior consultation with the International ISU Union (ISU).
On July 3, 2009, the Pechstein ice skating world association and without doping proof “due to blood doping”, had blocked it retrospectively from February 9, 2009 for two years. Pechstein then stated that doctors had found significant indications of a blood tanomaly. In November 2009, the International Sports Court CAS confirmed the judgment of ISU in Lausanne. Pechstein then missed the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
Lengthy process
On December 30, 2012, Pechstein filed for the first time at the Munich District Court. Since then, the world of ice skating and Pechstein have been in a legal discussion. Pechstein moved to the fight, among other things before the Federal Constitutional Court. This gave Pechstein’s complaint in 2022: The CAS procedure is said to have been unfair, their claim for damages is permitted.
Most recently, both parties met in October 2024 in front of the Munich Higher Regional Court. The Pechstein page demanded exactly 8,372,908.51 euros. The defense of Pechstein, however, indicated in the session hall 28 of the Munich Palace of Justice that one would be satisfied with four million plus interest and, from their point of view, a well -formulated admission of the ISU.
For the association, ISU legal advisor Michael Geistlinger made it clear, both demands went too far. Then you will “spend another 15 years with the case,” said Geistlinger at the time. The judge said for the first time that Pechstein’s claim for damages was right before a German civil court and urged a comparison. This could have happened now. The next day of negotiations would have been on April 10th.
