Belgian-British Mack Rutherford (16) wants to become the youngest person to fly solo around the world. His name might ring a bell. After all, Mack is the brother of Zara Rutherford (19), who returned last month from a five-month solo flight around the world, making her the youngest woman to have that achievement to her name.
If all goes according to plan, Mack will begin his round-the-world journey from Sofia Airport in Bulgaria on March 18. His trip, which will include more than sixty stops on five different continents, will last approximately three months, and unlike his sister, Mack will travel from east to west. From Sofia it flies south to Africa with stops in Congo, Madagascar and Mauritius. He then travels east to Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan and Russia. From there he crosses the Bering Strait to Alaska, to fly along the west coast of the US to Mexico. He then crosses the Atlantic Ocean via the east coast of Canada, to land again in Sofia.
Like his sister, Mack has dual British and Belgian nationality and lives in Belgium. Their parents are also both pilots. The boy obtained his pilot’s license in 2020 when he was fifteen years old and has already completed many flying hours. Together with his father, for example, he already undertook two transatlantic crossings. The teenager has dreamed of a future as a pilot since he was three. “It’s just indescribable, I’ve always loved it,” he says. “I am fortunate to have a family that can help me improve my flying. But whatever your background, I believe it’s never too early to start working on your dreams and don’t let the expectations of others limit yourself.”
If he succeeds in his plans, Mack will become the youngest pilot to have flown around the world. That record is currently held by 18-year-old Briton Travis Ludlow. In addition, he will also set a second record, namely that of the youngest person to use an ultralight aircraft for his solo flight.
