Flames and smoke erupt from the hood. The black S-Class Mercedes (built in 1971) caught fire. At the last moment, owner Jürgen Ö. (47) rescue from the classic car!
Apparently, flying sparks from the ignition started the devastating fire. Juergen O. to the BZ: “I came from shopping, pulled out the ignition key and suddenly there was a jet of flame from the bonnet. Then there was only smoke…”
He yanked open the door, jumped out of the car, and then watched helplessly as his “four-wheeled dream” burst into flames. The fire brigade came and put out the flames. “Fortunately, I had to park outside because of construction work, otherwise I’ll drive the car onto the property. My children were playing there at the time.”
The businessman bought the car three years ago. Since then he has put a lot of money and “even more heart and soul” into restoring it.
He estimates the current value of the old luxury car at around 150,000 euros. “There aren’t many of them left.” The black coupé was delivered in 1971 with air conditioning, a power sunroof, power windows and leather interior. “Today normal, back then it was extraordinary.”
