The police arrested another three men in Mill, Heesch and Wanroij on Wednesday morning, who were allegedly involved in a raid last October. At that time, four poachers were already arrested in the outskirts of Mill, after officers found a bag with fifteen dead hares in a car. They would have been torn apart by greyhounds.
Last fall, the police had been receiving reports of possible poaching in the Mill area for some time. Poachers would search the meadows for wild animals with special light boxes, and then send their dogs to it.
An organized police action in the night of 16 to 17 October immediately hit the mark. Boas saw two cars beaming across the meadows with beams of light.
Frontal collision
When officers decided to check the cars, one of the cars quickly took off. The other also tried to escape, but almost crashed into the police car and then collided head-on with the enforcers’ car. The occupants, a man from Helmond (62) and one from Den Bosch (55), could then be arrested.
The impact completely destroyed the poachers’ car. After inspection, it turned out that the vehicle was specially made for poaching, with extra lighting, for example. The officers also found a bag with fifteen killed hares with bite and laceration wounds in the back seat.
Pursuit
Moments later, surveillance officers saw the second car driving. A short chase ensued, which ended in a dry ditch in front of the fleeing car. There, the police were able to arrest two more men from Eindhoven, aged 24 and 34. Six hazewind courts were also seized.
In recent months, police have continued to investigate the poaching. That resulted in three more arrests on Wednesday. It concerns men from Mill (45), Heesch (46) and Wanroij (44). It is still unclear what their exact role was.
