Prolonged preventive detention announced
Berlin’s governing mayor, Kai Wegner (CDU), announced on Tuesday that he wanted to examine the possibility of preventive detention lasting several days.
“As a coalition, we will create the legal requirements for preventive detention of up to five days,” Wegner told the Tagesspiegel. “Interior and Justice Senator will work hand in hand here.”
The possibility of preventive custody is already available in Berlin for up to 48 hours. In Bavaria, on the other hand, it is much longer. With the instrument, people are to be taken into custody if, from the point of view of the authorities, they are about to commit a criminal offense or an administrative offense “of considerable importance to the general public”, as stated in Bavarian law.
