137 motorists were ticketed on the A2, A67, A58 and A50 on Tuesday because they were busy with their phones behind the wheel. Each driver receives a print of 350 euros on the mat. The police drove around in a coach and inconspicuous police cars to sling drivers.
The action turned out to be a lucrative way to fill the state coffers: in total, the fines of the 137 texting drivers brought in 47,950 euros. On top of the 350 euros per fine, there are also administrative costs of nine euros.
Even more fines
A total of 182 fines were handed out, of which 137 for texting behind the wheel. It was not disclosed what the other fines were for. The police checks for so-called ‘mono driving’ for road safety reasons.
For example, the police work from a coach to sling drivers on the ticket.
