Fan of tomatoes? Then you should be in Bergen op Zoom on Thursday morning. There, about 13,000 kilos will be distributed free of charge on the Noordland business park. The tomatoes are now stored in a container, which must be emptied as soon as possible.
The container is almost impossible to miss on the Conradweg site. As soon as the doors open, a gust of cold air comes out. As far as the eye can see, there are tens of thousands of tomatoes, stored refrigerated in twelve meter high stacks of boxes.
Those tomatoes were donated to Curio by a grower from Steenbergen last year. “The tomatoes were left over and the grower wanted to sponsor them so that we can use them to make soups for a good cause,” says Jacky Masseurs of Curio.
“Anything better than the bin.”
But now that the breeding season is about to start again, the container and boxes have to be returned to the grower empty. “That means we are forced to throw the tomatoes away. But of course we don’t want that with such a wonderful product. That’s why we much prefer to give people the chance to pick them up from us for free.”
His colleague George Stander agrees. “Time is running out and everything is better than the waste bin. The tomatoes are certainly still suitable for a tasty soup or sauce. Who will save us from these red rascals?”
Anyone who feels like it can come by next Thursday between eight and ten o’clock in the morning for a supply.
