France mourns the loss of a football icon. Just Fontaine is dead. He died at the age of 89. His 13 goals at the 1958 World Cup will not be forgotten.

The family confirmed Fontaine’s death to the AFP news agency.

Fontaine scored 30 goals in just 21 internationals for France between 1953 and 1960. The Marrakesh-born striker became a legend with his 13 goals at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden – an unmatched goal record, with which he led his team to the semi-finals for the first time.

PSG: “A sad day”

“A monument to French football has passed away”wrote Fontaine’s ex-club Paris Saint-Germain on Twitter: “It’s a sad day for all Paris supporters.” As a coach, Fontaine led PSG to the first division in 1974. He had previously coached the French national team in 1967, among other things.
