1200 dancers at World Cup ballroom dancing: ‘Everyone wants to win in Assen’

“Yes, this competition is very famous in England and Wales. Definitely!”, says dancer Isabel Milton. English is the official language at the Bonte Wever in Assen this weekend. The World Ballroom and Latin Dance World Cup is held there. The turnout is great.

“I think we have 600 pairs, so 1,200 people who participate in different competitions,” says organizer Mas Bijster. “From under six to over sixty, all ages are here this weekend. And they come from all over the world. From America to South Africa and from Israel to even someone from Australia.”

Why do all these dancers know where to find Assen? “People think we have a very good game,” Bijster said. “As a jury we have former world champions, there is a beautiful floor and the hall is beautiful. Usually these kinds of competitions are held in a sports hall, then De Bonte Wever is much nicer.”

“In addition, we have a very good audience in the Netherlands,” continues the organizer. “People are enthusiastic and clap a lot. Dancers sometimes say that they find it difficult to have energy in the final because they are so excited in the rounds before that. I think that’s a nice thing.”
