As of now, 2023 looks really promising when it comes to video games. Among other things, there are plenty of sequels to well-known series, but also completely new titles.
2022 was a good year for gamers. With big titles like “Elden Ring”, “Pokémon Crimson and Crimson”, “God of War Ragnarök” or “Stray” there were really some highlights. But 2023 is, as of now, a promising year with many new titles for PC and consoles. The TECHBOOK editorial team is particularly looking forward to these video games in 2023!

The choice is of course a bit subjective. But there is something from almost every genre and for every platform!
Hogwarts Legacy—February 10, 2023
With “Hogwarts Legacy” a game starts in February that many people should be looking forward to. Despite all the debates in recent years, the “Harry Potter” franchise is one of the biggest, best known and most popular in the world. So far, the games have, with a few exceptions, been clearly based on the books by J.K Rowling. In other words: We accompanied Harry and his friends on their adventures. Now, in Hogwarts Legacy, we can explore Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for ourselves. It is already clear that the players are quite free to design their gaming experience themselves – including the end of the game! So we not only get a slightly modified Hogwarts in the 19th century, but also an open world in which we can move freely and place our self-created character.
Octopath Traveler 2 – February 24, 2023
The first part of “Octopath Traveler” was surprisingly good and emphatic for many. The adventure game in pixel graphics brings many details that make it a great gaming experience. The sequel picks up a lot of that. Practically nothing should change in the optics, just as little as in the basic concept. So we get eight different characters again, whose episodic stories we explore over time. Both in the turn-based battles and the actions outside of it, it is important to use the abilities of the group members perfectly. The game world itself should also be a completely new one. The biggest innovation is the day-night system, to which various new abilities of the characters are linked.
Resident Evil 4 (Remake) – March 24, 2023
The Resident Evil series is without question one of the biggest in the horror genre. The news that a remake of the fourth or sixth part should appear in 2023 made many players happy. Especially since the makers have already announced that they will not repeat a much-criticized mistake in the 3-series remake and it affects the scope of the new edition. In fact, it was even shorter than the original Resident Evil 3. In the fourth part, you want to stick to the original from 2005 as far as the story is concerned. With the president’s daughter Ashley Graham, this also includes one of the most annoying characters in gaming history, which should now be implemented in a more contemporary way. Otherwise, the remake includes not only revised graphics but also new elements such as a sneak function.
Dead Island 2 – April 28, 2023
The title “Dead Island 2” has been in development for what feels like 100 years. But that also gives a lot of hope for the actual release of the video game in 2023. The successor does without a large open world and instead presents players with a kind of level system; many had wanted that for “Dead Island” two. In terms of content, there is probably just as little offered as in the predecessors, but that is also an essential part of the game concept. For this we get some new combat and crafting functions to face the zombies.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – May 12, 2023
Another successful sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, is scheduled for release in 2023. The first part “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” was released in 2017 for the release of the then new Nintendo Switch game console and was not entirely uninvolved in its really good start. The game also took Nintendo’s Zelda series to a whole new level. The sequel is supposed to connect seamlessly in terms of content, so that Link and Zelda are directly confronted with a new (old) threat. Important innovations probably concern both the weapons and the locomotion options for Link. Our hero can apparently fly again in “BotW 2”. Diablo IV – June 6, 2023
Just thinking about this game should make many gaming fans sweaty palms. In the eternal struggle between good and evil, this time we have to deal with Lilith. In “Diablo IV” we return to the game world Sanctuary, which is threatened by the mother of all demons and a cult who worships her. In contrast to the previous parts, however, we get a kind of open world that is not randomly generated. Of course, there are still a few to create a real “Diablo” feeling. In addition, it is already known that there will be a real PvP mode in the new part of the series!
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum – Q1 2023
A stealth adventure game starring Gollum from German developer studio Daedalic – can there be anything better? Actually only that the video game will finally appear in 2023. The release has already been postponed. But for a 2023 launch, everything is looking good so far. So if nothing else comes between us, then we can finally slip into the skin of one of the most exciting beings from Tolkien’s universe and explore well-known Middle-earth locations.
The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria – Q2 2023
For “Lord of the Rings” fans there is really a lot of new content right now. Because in addition to the Gollum game and Amazon’s big blockbuster series, another video game is to come in 2023 that will bring us back to Tolkien’s popular fantasy world. And in the truest sense of the word, because that’s already in the title: “Return to Moria”. So we end up in the dwarven kingdom of Moria, which at the time of Frodo’s journey is destroyed and occupied by a Balrog and orcs. After Gandalf, as is well known, literally blew out the lights of the former, the dwarfs now want to reclaim their former homeland.
Baldur’s Gate 3 – August 2023
If you read the list for the new video games 2023, it almost seems as if the developer studios had agreed with each other. Because with “Baldur’s Gate” another really big name gets a sequel. The first part was a milestone in role-playing history in 1998, but it’s really quite a few years old. The last part so far, “Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2” was no longer developed by Bioware and was released in 2004. The officially third part of the series starts 100 years after the events in “Baldur’s Gate 2”. So-called mind flayers have taken over the well-known game world of Faerûn and are injecting other parasites in order to transform them as well – a pure fantasy zombie apocalypse, so to speak. The player and his five companions must now find a cure and also stop their own mutation.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage – tba
“Mirage” will already be the 13th part of the “Assassin’s Creed” series. For this purpose, Ubisoft wants to return more to its roots after the digressions of the past games. The video game, which will be released in 2023, should be more reminiscent of the popular first three parts. For this, the number of role-playing elements and the open world are to be reduced somewhat and a return to the more linear plot pattern is to be made. The player ends up in the body of the street thief Basim Ibn Ishaq in Baghdad, where he is to be trained as an assassin.
Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 – tba
More than ten years after the successful first part, “Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2” will finally come in all likelihood after 2023. This news and the first images of the game made waves. And with that, fan-favorite Space Marine Captain Titus is back. In the shooter you now have to deal with the dangerous Tyranids. In any case, the trailer already promises a lot of crazy shooter space action.
Hollow Knight: Silksong – tba
After the fantastic first part, the expectations of “Hollow Knight: Silksong” are correspondingly high. The 2D-Jump’n’Run fighting game is based on the mechanics of the predecessor as much as possible. With Hornet, however, we get a more acrobatic hero who can do more tricks. He also needs them to escape from the dark kingdom of Pharloom, into which he was kidnapped.
