The fire on the Euroferry Olympia of the Italian shipping company Grimaldi was not completely extinguished this morning. A huge plume of smoke can still be seen on television images.
The ferry had departed from the Greek port of Igoumenitsa and was en route to Italy. There were at least 290 people on board. An investigation is still ongoing, but the fire may have started with a truck in the hold.
On Friday, 278 people could be rescued. At least ten of them were hospitalized. Nine Bulgarians and three Greeks are still missing, the Greek coast guard has announced. Among the rescued passengers were two Afghans who were not on the passenger list. There are fears that others were illegally traveling on the ferry.
