Last Sunday (March 20), the Brandenburg Gate became the meeting place for more than 300,000 visitors who, together with numerous celebrities, demonstrated against the war in Ukraine.
A “peaceful and emotional demonstration”
“Set a sign for peace, democracy and human rights”: That was the goal of the “Sound of Peace” initiative at the weekend, which sees itself as a “large and international solidarity alliance of artists and cultural workers”. According to the organizers, around 300,000 visitors followed the invitation to the peaceful rally in order to support this objective. According to the press release, they would have made an “emotional” demonstration possible.
According to “Sound of Peace”, more than 50 different stars made musical contributions to the peace rally, including Marius Müller-Westernhagen, Sarah Connor, Peter Maffay, Michael Patrick Kelly, Clueso, Revolverheld, Silbermond, Rea Garvey, David Garrett and Mark Forster.
Speakers included Natalia Klitschko, wife of Kiev mayor and ex-boxer Vitali Klitschko, Tilo Jung, the Ukrainian singer Jamala, the actresses Jasna Fritzi Bauer, Katharina Zorn and Jella Haase, Sebastian Fitzek and Oliver Kalkofe. There were also live broadcasts to Ukraine that painted a “strong and worrying picture” that the alliance wants to take action against.
Not only the on-site visitors were able to follow the call for donations from “Sound of Peace”: The event was also broadcast live on TV, as well as on Twitch and YouTube. In this way, a total of 12.5 million euros was collected, which is to be distributed to various aid organizations in Ukraine.
