Draft horse Wietske ended up in a dry ditch this morning at the Baaneind in Heukelom. The animal could not get out on its own. A number of runners noticed the animal and called the fire brigade. Firefighters dug out the ditch and then managed to pull the animal out of the ditch using ropes, hoses and a crane.
Wietske’s owner supervised the rescue operation. According to him, Wietske could not have been in the ditch for long. He had seen her in the meadow shortly before the rescue operation. Presumably her leg fell off the embankment due to the wet weather and ended up in the ditch. Wietske is a 15 year old Belgian draft horse. She is now recovering in the meadow until she can stand on her own two feet again.
