11 arrests, 3 injured officers after FC Twente match against Fiorentina

The police in Enschede have arrested eleven people around the match between FC Twente and the Italian Fiorentina on Thursday evening. The suspects have been arrested for open violence, assault, vandalism and illegal possession of weapons, reports the police Friday. The ME charged around the football stadium to separate supporters of both clubs. Three officers suffered minor injuries.

During the match, according to the police, “probably” several people were slightly injured when a fireworks bomb was thrown. The referee temporarily stopped the match because of the fireworks bomb. At 1.15 am, the police reported that peace had returned around the stadium and that most supporters had left the city center of Enschede.

On Wednesday, there were also confrontations between supporters of Twente and Fiorentina. The municipality of Enschede imposed an emergency ordinance on this, which, among other things, prohibited Italian supporters from entering the city centre. The emergency ordinance expired at 7 a.m. Friday.

FC Twente played against Fiorentina in the play-offs for a place in the group stage of the Conference League. The Italians qualified for the main tournament on Thursday thanks to a 0-0 draw, after Twente already lost 2-1 in Florence last week.
