105th Giro d’Italia starts in Budapest

Budapest (AP) – The 105th Giro d’Italia starts in Budapest, Hungary, on Friday.

From a German point of view, Emanuel Buchmann is hoping for a top position in the world’s second largest cycling tour, which is extremely difficult at more than 51,000 meters in altitude. The Tour of Italy ends on May 29 in Verona.

Due to the Hungarian detour, the Giro starts on Friday. After three days, the first day of rest follows before continuing in Sicily, where the first mountain finish on Etna awaits on Tuesday. The route has a total of five mountain finishes ready for the drivers. The third week in particular will be extremely difficult. There are also two time trials, on the second day in Budapest over 9.2 kilometers and on the final day in Verona over 17.1 kilometers

Emanuel Buchmann wants to attack again after two difficult years with falls, illnesses and Corona. He hasn’t given up his dream of a podium finish in a grand tour. In his Bora-hansgrohe team, however, he has to share the role of captain with Wilco Kelderman (Netherlands) and Jai Hindley (Australia).

Lennard Kämna wants to show himself in breakaway groups and win a stage like in the 2020 Tour de France. Phil Bauhaus could play a role on the flat stages. The Bocholter has already achieved some top rankings this season, including a day’s victory in the WorldTour Tirreno Adriatico.
