10,000 people demonstrate in Munich against federal austerity plans

MUNICH (dpa-AFX) – According to the police, around 10,000 people came together on Sunday in Munich at a demonstration under the motto “Hand in hand for our country”. The organizers had previously expected up to 50,000 participants.

A broad alliance of farmers, craftsmen, restaurateurs, freight forwarders and public sector employees called for the protest. The participants held posters with slogans like “No to the green Planned economy” or “Too much is too much – new elections now”.

The organizers had asked participants in advance to travel by public transport and to avoid using tractors and trucks. Nevertheless, 300 vehicles were present at the protest on Theresienweise, as a police spokeswoman said. The strike at Deutsche Bahn, which was still ongoing on Sunday, had probably made it more difficult for many participants to get there.

Farmers nationwide have been protesting since the beginning of January, particularly against the federal government’s plans to gradually end the subsidy for agricultural diesel in Germany by 2026./ses/DP/jha
