100 m sprint: favorite Kerley in the final – Olympic champion Jacobs injured

Gold favorite Fred Kerley is in the 100m final of the World Athletics Championships from Eugene, but failed to impress in the semifinals. Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs did not compete due to injury. Medals will be awarded at 4.50am.

Kerley won his semi-final, but the American was visibly unhappy with a time of 10.02 seconds. “The Legend”, as Kerley calls himself, wants the title badly after he “only” took home silver at the Olympic Games last year. Jamaica’s Oblique Seville set the fastest semi-final time in 9.9 seconds.

Olympic champion Jacobs has to pass injured

100 m Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs will not play a role in the award ceremony at 4.50 a.m. (in the live ticker on sportschau.de). The Italian did not appear in the semi-finals due to a muscle injury in his hip. “It’s a painful decision. But I really wanted to be in Eugene. However, I’m not at 100 percent,” said Jacobs.

Jacobs and the Italian federation left it open whether he would still be in the 4×100 m relay. Jacobs had won gold over 100 m at the summer games in Tokyo last year and also led the Italian relay to victory.
