10 years after Michael Schumacher’s accident: extensive ARD documentary series

ARD is presenting a documentary series about seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher, who disappeared from public view ten years ago (December 29, 2013) after a tragic skiing accident. The miniseries entitled “Being Michael Schumacher” highlights the life and career of the motorsport idol. The five episodes are available in the ARD media library.

“He could be tough and ruthless”

The series, created by author and filmmaker Andreas Troll, offers a comprehensive look at Schumacher’s career. From his beginnings on the kart track in the North Rhine-Westphalia province to his status as a world star celebrated by the press and fans. Troll uses interviews, rare footage and archive footage to tell the Ferrari driver’s story. Interviews show numerous companions, such as his brother Ralf Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and the former Mercedes team boss Norbert Haug. The documentary provides insights into the racing driver’s life. In the interview, his former racetrack rival David Coulthard reports: “He could be tough and ruthless.” Nevertheless, the Kerpen native remained modest and frugal despite his global heroism. He is described as reserved, friendly and humorous.

The series highlights Schumacher’s time at Ferrari, where he not only shaped his career but also the history of the team. With five consecutive world championship titles, the now 54-year-old became a symbol of motorsport. The series ends cautiously when it comes to Schumacher’s current condition and his rehabilitation.
