Year-end time is list time! That’s why, in keeping with tradition, we didn’t miss the opportunity to choose the 50 best records of the year for the Musikexpress issue 01/2023 as the heart of our big 46-page annual review special. A highly esteemed conglomerate of incorruptible editors and authors voted for it, each of whom submitted their top 20 and from which we calculated our official top 50 in a mathematically possibly highly complicated but certainly democratic process. We published the complete list on musikexpress.de on Christmas Day.
As an appetizer for the magazine itself and for the sake of democratic disclosure, we gradually showed you which albums were most celebrated by whom in the editorial department, here are the top 20 by Stephan Rehm Rozanes, Linus Volkmann, Julia Lorenz, Julia Friese, André Boße, Annett Scheffel, Thomas Winkler, Frank Sawatzki, Aida Baghernejad, Hella Wittenberg, Emma Wiepking, Fabian Soethof and Felicitas Boell.
In the printed magazine, however, we also looked beyond the albums of the year: Which films, series, books and songs were particularly recommended in 2022? Here, after our top 10 songs of the year and the 10 best series of the year, are the 10 best films of 2022. Selected by ME author Chris Weiß.
10 best movies of 2022
1.Elvis
A Wop Bop A Loo Bop A Lop Baz Boom: If you wanted to rip something in the cinema in 2022, you had to turn it up, throw everything into the balance, set the regulator to 11. What you don’t have to say twice to Baz Luhrmann, who found a subject in “Elvis” that won’t be overwhelmed by the Australian’s iconoclasm. The King of Rock’n’Roll, as we learned this year, is not only larger than life, but also larger than the Luhrmanns vision. truth beauty Freedom. love
2. Nope
Another one who understood that you have to fill the canvas to the brim. What was billed as Jordan Peele’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” turned out to be more of a Get Out director’s homage to Jaws – and a fresco between cowboys and aliens, all about the black experience in the US of A told what you need to know. “This is the lost generation” – Needledrop of the year.
3. The event
When Audrey Diwan won the Golden Lion in Venice in 2021 with her film adaptation of the novel by Annie Ernaux about a student in France in the early 1960s who is fighting with increasing desperation for an abortion, one could not have guessed that Roe v. Wade was shot down and Ernaux was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Latest Movie of the Year!
4. Licorice Pizza
The great filmmakers look inwards. None does it as entertainingly as PT Anderson, who not only brings Southern California to life in 1973, but creates reverse truck action like no other.
5. Triangle of Sadness
Really hit the shit once. Don’t go to the cinema that often. Especially not literally. Ruben Östlund received the Palme d’Or in Cannes. And from us the Mister Creosote Monty Python Meaning of Life Memorial Award.
6. She Said
Maria Schrader has made a film about Harvey Weinstein without Harvey Weinstein and a journalism thriller that’s always especially good when it’s not like The Untouchables.
7. The worst person in the world
Renate Reinsve runs through Oslo. And time stands still. A matter of course in Joachim Trier’s sad comedy about self-discovery, which never runs out of ideas to tell how beautiful life is, especially when death is approaching.
8. Everything Everywhere All At Once
And yet another film that only knows full throttle, an iconoclasm so merciless that its pure nihilism turns into its opposite like a magic trick before the eyes of the viewer. At the end you are amazed at how touched and moved you are.
9. Rhinegold
Fatih Akin made his “GoodFellas”: a great German gangster film that has so much epic breath and lust for storytelling that it not only has space for the life story of rapper Xatar, but also tells Kurdish history as if on the side.
10. Moonage Daydream
How should one do justice to the life and work and the artistic significance of David Bowie in a film if not in an experimental collage of image and sound – always to be played at maximum volume. And Ziggy played guitar.
