The clubs did not provide any information on the transfer modalities, according to the Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Nottingham will transfer a sum of around 10 million euros to the FSV. Thanks to bonuses, this could increase again by EUR 5 million to EUR 15 million. This puts the Frenchman in the top 5 of the most expensive departures from Mainz. Thanks to the Niakhaté deal, the income of the “zero fives” will increase to at least 24 million euros – on the expenditure side, 9.3 million euros have been booked so far. After Taiwo Awoniyi, the defender is Forest’s second new signing from the Bundesliga this summer (overview).

Niakhaté had more than tripled his market value from €5m to €18m since the €6m move from Metz to FSV in the summer of 2018. In the past season he was on the pitch in 30 of 34 Bundesliga games (four goals), was only absent through injury and failed to go the full distance twice in his appearances. Mainz coach Bo Svensson had recently publicly valued his protégé as an “absolute leader”.
