“Club” no longer wants rent
There has been talk of a new home ground for 1. FC Nuremberg for some time: the Max Morlock Stadium is in a state of disrepair and costs the francs a year rent, which according to the “picture“ is around 2.5 million euros per year. The first concrete hurdle with regard to a new stadium has now been laid together with the city in the form of a feasibility study, as the club announced. Ideally, the arena should be completed before the end of this decade.
“If everything goes well, the foundation stone should be laid in 2026 and played in it in 2029,” the newspaper quoted Nuremberg Sports Mayor Christian Vogel as saying. The aim of the “club” and the city is therefore a stadium in which the club itself has a stake. The city is interested in this because maintenance work on the current arena alone would cost up to 30 million euros. Both a conversion and a new building are within the realm of possibility.
“The laying of the foundation stone announced by the city in 2026 is an ambitious milestone. Now we have the stopwatch in front of our noses and will step on the gas accordingly,” said FCN CFO Niels Rossow. In the current season, an average of 30,445 fans are watching 1. FC Nürnberg’s home games, which means fourth place compared to the 2nd Bundesliga. However, the occupancy rate is only 60.9 percent – only SV Sandhausen (35.7%), Fortuna Düsseldorf (52.2%) and 1.FC Heidenheim 1846 (59.6%) are below (to compare the number of visitors in the second division).
