1. FC Köln: striker Anthony Modeste indicates farewell

No contract talks

The unclear future of top scorer Anthony Modeste continues to cause a stir at 1. FC Köln. “The club knows what to do. In the end, I need a bit of security,” the striker announced at the beginning of the year regarding a possible extension of his working papers. However, due to financial constraints, the Bundesliga club has not yet entered into contract talks. “We are currently unable to extend the contract,” said managing director Christian Keller recently. A situation that is difficult for the 34-year-old Frenchman to bear – in the context of a media round during the FC training camp in Donaueschingen, Modeste again indicated a farewell.

Like the portal “goat blog“ reports that Modeste’s advisor is already actively looking for a club for his client. At the beginning of the year, the club and players had rejected a “very, very lucrative offer” from Saudi Arabia – that shouldn’t happen a second time, according to Modeste’s statements. “At the time we made the clear decision not to do that. But now I have to think about myself too. I only have one career, winning titles. (…) I am always honest and have a clear line. If something comes up, I have to talk to the club about it. But I don’t think that will be a problem, because I think that the top earners will have to leave. (…) So it won’t be a problem when I’m gone,” the striker said in the “picture” quoted the newspaper with his tip towards the club leadership.

Against the background of the financial losses suffered during the pandemic, this had repeatedly promised financial losses and a salary cap for the squad. The association must “turn over every euro five times in all transactions that we make,” affirmed financial director Philipp Türoff recently in an interview with “Express”.

1. FC Köln: Modeste leaves question marks behind his future

Next summer Modeste could leave the club for free when he is 35 years old. The right footer, who scored 24 goals in 32 Bundesliga games last season, is by no means out of the question of a short-term departure from Cologne: “I’m 34 years old. If I get the chance to get another contract somewhere for two or three years, I have to talk to the club. (…) I’ve shot FC twice to Europe with my goals. In the end, it doesn’t matter if the player stays. I’m just doing my job.” It’s clear that the player’s patience is reaching its limits: “What if I start the season with an expiring contract and then don’t get an extension,” Modeste continued.

When asked about his sporting goals, with or without FC, the attacker kept a low profile: “Staying healthy” was the focus. With a view to the future of Modeste and his teammate Ellyes Skhiri, who has been linked to Olympique Lyon, Cologne coach Steffen Baumgart had said at the beginning of the week “sky‘ explains: ‘If I now stand up and say that they will definitely be there, then it will be interesting if it isn’t. But I am firmly assuming that both will start the season with us. There is only speculation from outside by people who then make their forecasts. From the squad that we have here right now, nobody is about to leave, but that doesn’t mean that something can’t happen. Of course, as a coach, I would like to have both players with me. Both are very good in training and I don’t have the feeling that their minds are elsewhere. They are clearly here and that is how they work. If at some point an offer comes along, we will sit down, talk openly about it and see what comes of it.”
