1. FC Köln redeemed themselves with victory in the Rhine derby against Gladbach

First an insane fireworks display from the fans, then the great relief from Florian Kainz’s penalty double: Of all places, 1. FC Köln celebrated their longed-for first win of the season in the Bundesliga in the Rhine derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Coach Steffen Baumgart’s team defeated their arch-rivals 3-1 (1-0) and left the bottom of the table.

Captain Kainz (9th, according to video evidence) first converted a hand penalty. After the equalizer by Nico Elvedi (63rd) and the red card against Manu Kone (70th, according to video evidence), Kainz scored again from the spot – but only in the second attempt. Because Gladbach’s goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas moved too early, Kainz was allowed to play again. Luca Waldschmidt (90th) made the final decision.

The Cologne fans had already warmed up their team for the 97th Rhine derby in the Bundesliga – then they caused a delayed kick-off with the massive setting off of pyrotechnics.

For almost 90 seconds, rocket after rocket flew into the air, clouds of smoke wafting through the stadium. It took six minutes until visibility improved and referee Deniz Aytekin’s kick-off whistle sounded – it was the starting signal for a furious start for FC.

Bundesliga: Gladbach too harmless in the Rhine derby at 1. FC Cologne

Seoane reacted with a double substitution: Rocco Reitz for Florian Neuhaus and Joe Scally for Luca Netz should give the guests more security. But Julian Weigl played a free kick in his own half directly into Kainz’s feet. The Austrian fed Davie Selke, whose shot was blocked at the last moment (58th).

Apart from a few pinpricks, FC now mostly left the ball to Gladbach and started running much later. Although Borussia remained largely harmless in the game, they now had more set pieces. Elvedi headed a corner to equalize, and the thrilling final phase was tough.
