2017/18 ended in relegation
Sports director Christian Keller has supported coach Steffen Baumgart during the sporting crisis at 1. FC Köln. “Steffen has been doing a very good job here for over two years – together with his coaching team. I can see how work is done every day – how meticulous, hard-working, reflective, but also self-critical it is,” said the manager in an interview with the TV channel “Sky”: “You always put yourself in front of the team, which is why Steffen with his “The team here is spot on.”
After seven Bundesliga games, Cologne is still winless and is in last place in the table. Only once did the club start a season worse: in 2017/18, under Peter Stöger, they only had one point at the same point in the season, but the goal difference was even worse at 2:15. At the end of the season there was the last relegation in the club’s history to date.
Keller doesn’t want to waste any time thinking about a similar outcome. “I like to talk about the here and now and not about relegation scenarios,” said the 46-year-old: “In the here and now we got off to a bad start and know that we have a very challenging season ahead of us.” But we are certain of that convinced “that in the end we will be in a place that has nothing to do with relegation”. The derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach is scheduled to begin on Sunday (3:30 p.m.).
