Injured in the knee
1. FC Köln has extended the expiring contract of right winger Jan Thielmann. The 21-year-old signed a new working paper with the Bundesliga club dated until 2026. The homegrown player has played 101 competitive games for the professional team since 2020.
With Thielmann and Horn: Most valuable professionals from Cologne’s youth
FC managing director Christian Keller explained: “Jan is one of our greatest talents. He has developed constantly since his professional debut and, at just 21 years old, has already made over 100 professional appearances. If it hadn’t been for the injury setbacks of the recent past, he would have had even more appearances. We are therefore firmly convinced that his development is not yet at an end and we look forward to him being back on the pitch soon and continuing his path at FC. We will have a lot of fun with Jan, especially because of his outstanding mentality.”
Due to a knee injury, Thielmann has not played so far this season. Last season he contributed five goals in 23 league games for coach Steffen Baumgart’s team, but mostly didn’t go beyond short appearances. His career high of 9 million euros from 2022 was recently reduced to 6.5 million euros. In 2022, the youngster was nominated for the “Golden Boy” award as one of the 40 best U21 players in Europe.
“What I’ve been able to experience so far with FC motivates me to really push hard every day in rehab. I can hardly wait to finally be back on the pitch and support FC with everything I have to be successful with our team and the coaching team. I was an FC fan even as a little boy and really wanted to play for Cologne and am therefore very proud that I became a professional here. “I’m really looking forward to the next few years at FC and what we can all achieve together,” said Thielmann during his extension.
