1. FC Köln: Captain Jonas Hector ends his career in the summer

Announced after beating TSG

Jonas Hector will not extend his expiring contract with 1. FC Köln and will end his active career in the summer. The captain announced this decision in his club’s dressing room after the 3-1 (2-0) win at TSG Hoffenheim. The 32-year-old and trainer Steffen Baumgart then confirmed the decision on the microphones in the mixed zone.

“After my family, it was important for me to inform my team, the coaching team and the staff first. For the moment I don’t want to say more than that I’m incredibly grateful for what we have together at FC,” said Hector, who played his 342nd game for the club against Hoffenheim. In the list of “Effzeh” record players, he is in 16th place.

Hector came to Cologne in 2010 and made his professional debut in the 2012 DFB Cup. In the following years he made two relegations and promotions and became a national player in 2014. The left-footed player, who played 43 times for the DFB team, was a regular at the 2016 European Championship and converted the decisive penalty in the quarterfinals against Italy (7:6). He also won the 2017 Confederations Cup. In the same year, Hector reached his highest market value of 20 million euros.

“It’s a big loss for the club. A great FC player goes with him. But his motives are completely understandable for the trainer and also for me”, explained managing director Christian Keller. Further details are to follow in the coming days.
