1. FC Cologne: Dimitrios Limnios moves to Panathinaikos Athens

Cost 3.3 million in 2020

Dimitrios Limnios is leaving 1. FC Köln and moving to Panathinaikos Athens in his home country of Greece. There, the 25-year-old signed a contract valid from January 1st until the summer of 2027, as the capital club announced on Friday.

Limnios moved from PAOK Saloniki to Cologne in 2020 for a fee of 3.3 million euros, but was unable to establish himself there sustainably. He played just 15 games for FC (no goal involvement) and was loaned out to Twente Enschede in the Netherlands in the 2021/22 season. In the current season he did not play for the Cologne professionals; he played once for the reserves in the Regionalliga West. In the latest Bundesliga update, Limnios’ market value was reduced – from 1.2 million to 900,000 euros.

“Dimi’s situation was no longer satisfactory recently because he didn’t have enough playing time. At the same time, the competitive situation in our squad is such that we couldn’t give him that opportunity. For this reason, we have now found a good solution for both sides. We would like to thank Dimi for his commitment to FC and wish him all the best and much success in his new challenge,” Licensing Division Manager Thomas Kessler was quoted as saying in a statement from Cologne.

Limnios said: “It is important for me that I come to play for my club so that I can recommend myself to the national team again (last appearance in March; editor) through good performances in the league. Greece still has a chance of being at the European Championships. I would like to help with this. I’m looking forward to playing in my home country again. I would like to thank my team, everyone involved and the fans for their support. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for FC for the second half of the season so that the club stays in the Bundesliga.” Panathinaikos is Limnios’ third professional stop in his homeland and will meet Turkish coaching legend Fatih Terim there.
