? New ‘bat-alert’ for unpopular Alkmaar bat cellar: “Beep beep beep beep”

Bats: builders are only too happy to see them leave buildings that are being demolished, but the municipality of Alkmaar, Stadswerk072 and the Institute for Nature Education are happy to see them come. But then to a special cellar in Park Oosterhout. New lures have to get the animals there.

The basement was specially adapted for bats five years ago. There are openings with rough surfaces for good grip and it is damp, dark and not cold inside. Ideal conditions, but the cellar is still not popular with the target group.

In a report by media partner Alkmaar Central can be seen that there is only a butterfly in it. So new lures have been placed, such as a ceiling of wooden beams where bats can hang from and crawl between.

Modern technology is also used. “Now we are going to lend a hand by installing a bat-alert,” says Kevin Bruin of Stadswerk072. “That’s a device that makes noises from a bat.” The beeps, inaudible to humans, are supposed to lure the bats. And now it’s just a matter of waiting…
