Tennis star Alexander Zverev put a weak start to the US Open and failed early in the mixed competition. The 28-year-old left with double partner Belinda Bencic from Switzerland in the first round with a 0: 4, 3: 5 against the re-moved Americans Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison.
Zverev and Bencic, who won Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2021 and have known each other since childhood, had almost no chance, especially in the first set. At the Louis Armstrong Stadium of New York, it was noticeable in the world ranking of Zverev that he had previously had to deal with physical problems at the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati.
Zverev and Bencic should have competed against the Italian Jannik Sinner and Kateřina Siniaková from the Czech Republic. But the world ranking of Sinner withdrew a few hours after his illness -related task in the final in Cincinnati against Carlos Alcaraz.
Cincinnati semi-finalist Zverev had also reached his physical borders in the heat from Ohio. Unlike Sinner, the Hamburger, who also had more break for regeneration for a day, did not start his start. But the mission was not rewarded, Zverev, like Bencic, had too many lack of concentration. A double error from Bencic ended the largely one -sided match after 41 minutes.
The second round of the newly structured competition will also be held on Tuesday (local time). The semi -finals and the final are on the plan on Wednesday.
A total of 16 teams play for the title in the mixed doubles. The competition will be held for the first time during the week before the actual start of the Grand Slam tournament and only two days (19 and 20 August). Eight places were awarded by wildcards-much to the annoyance of the double specialists. There is criticism of the new format.
The games are completed with shortened sentences and take place in the big stadiums. The prize money for the winning team is increased to one million US dollars. As a rule, the top stars do not take part in the mixed to focus on the individual competition. This starts next Sunday.
