Simple, stylish, modern, flooded with light, with a large entrance area, open living kitchen or rather separated – people’s living preferences are completely different. Nevertheless, certain similarities can be emerged for various social groups.

Classification of different living types

People’s facilities are as diverse as their personalities. However, there are definitely people who have a similar taste in the equipment and furnishings of house or apartment and value the same things. The studied merchant Axel Schmitz, who has been working in residential project development for many years, analyzed the various target groups and highlighted aspects that are important to them. As part of his dissertation, he interviewed over 2,000 people to their residential preferences and also recorded age, level of education and their current living situation. For this purpose, he used the model of the Sinus milieus from the German Sinus Institute, a social typology that categorizes people according to life appearances and values. According to Schmitz, ten different types of living can be identified.

The older generation

On average, the group of traditional tends to include older people. Characterized by the post -war period, they are very down -to -earth, economical and want to preserve the old. Technical equipment is not particularly important to them. Most of the time, however, they have a television to which the setting up of the living room is geared, so that the focus is on it.

The wealthy

The conservative-established are the educated, self-confident elite with a very good income. You have a high level of exclusivity and attach great importance to art in your home. The entrance corridor often acts like a reception hall, which is mostly decorated with art and there is plenty of space in the house for instruments and bookshelves.

The group of liberal intellectuals is similar to the conservative-established, but is younger and entertainment. They like to spontaneously perceive opportunities and also have a high income. Freelancers and self -employed in particular are above average represented here. A firm and important part is to eat with the family or shared apartment. For this you are happy to use simple recipes or order something.

In the group of performers, the efficiency -oriented performance elite, which networking uses to climb the career ladder. The apartment is equipped with modern communication technologies that are also used for entertainment purposes. Performers do not need a separate study, so space is important to them for a large seating group in the living room. They also prefer residential kitchens and value large windows that let a lot of light into the apartment.

The middle class

People who can be assigned to the bourgeois center are in need of harmony, have a high need for security and do not like political or private discussions. They are ready to perform, hardworking and proud of what they have achieved. The bourgeois center attaches importance to order and privacy, otherwise your living preferences are rather inconspicuous. They prefer a separate kitchen and cupboards in the bathroom where you can hide cosmetic items. The bedroom is only there for you to sleep.

The socio -ecological are the opponents to the bourgeois center. They have an above -average education, high ethical values, have a lot of criticism of society and are usually involved in social or political. Technical equipment is not particularly important to you, but this group also prefers a kitchen in which the dining table plays an important role.

The adaptive-pragmatic form a rapidly growing milieu in the middle class. They are young, adaptable, benefit and future-oriented and have modern perspectives. Family is important to them. They are connected to their homeland and have a stable, tight circle of friends. Adaptive-pragmatic attach great importance to a balcony or terrace and prefer floor-to-ceiling windows. They also like built -in furniture and value burglary protection.

The hedonists form the currently largest sinus millieu in Germany. It is the lower middle class – mostly young people, students, students and trainees are one of them. They enjoy the present and don’t think much about the future. They usually spend their rather low incomes for their free time, for example to celebrate. Hedonists have small but well -equipped apartments. The kitchen is not important to them and can limit itself to the most necessary. You don’t need so much storage options for food either, as you make small purchases more often instead of a big weekly shopping. Hedonists are technically well equipped and often also have instruments. The bedroom is not only there for sleeping, but a multifunctional location where you like to spend time. Since you usually don’t have a family yet, you don’t value a children’s room.

The group of expeditives consists of people of the upper and medium -sized middle class who like to live in high -rise areas. They want to exceed borders and question traditional systems, like to discuss, are creative, individual and travel a lot. Expeditives striving for new experiences and move more frequently, for example for stays abroad. The kitchen is very important to you, you spend a lot of time there and also like to prepare elaborate food. Therefore, they also prefer residential kitchens. In the living room you need wall surfaces for books, pictures and memories. They attach great importance to light -flooded rooms with large window fronts and floor -to -ceiling windows.

The less well -heeled

The precarious are located at the bottom of the social spectrum, are afraid of the future and a rather weak self -image. They are characterized by concern about social exclusion and disadvantage. They often try to emulate others in consumption behavior, but are often looking for job due to their low level of education or earn little. There are rarely instruments or art and in the living room the television is the focus. Since this group often eats in front of the TV, a dining table is not absolutely necessary. They find floor -to -ceiling windows as uncomfortable and impractical.
