Daimler Truck is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of commercial vehicles such as trucks or buses. Since the two pioneers Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz laid the foundation stone for corporate development over 125 years ago, the group has repeatedly been confronted with new challenges.

• Daimler Truck produces and sells trucks and buses
• In 1926, the Daimler motor company and Benz & Cie merged
• Daimler Truck will be outsourced in 2021

Daimler Truck is now one of the world’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturers with over 100,000 employees at more than 40 locations in Europe, Asia and North and Latin America. There are also various sales and service points in many countries. Developed in a global network, the company produces trucks and buses that are sold under various brands. These include Bharatbenz, Freightliner and Fuso. With the Daimler Truck Financial Services, the vehicle manufacturer also offers financial services.

Two pioneers ring in the age of the automobile

It all started in 1886 when two pioneers – Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz – developed the world’s first automobiles. The two developers who have never met personally in their lives at the same time worked independently on their inventions – Daimler in Stuttgart and Benz in Mannheim. At the end of January 1886, Carl Benz registered the patent for his “vehicle with gas engine operation”. The patent is considered the “birth certificate of the automotive”. Benz and Daimler tried early on for the national and international marketing of their inventions and founded their own companies with the DMG (Daimler engine society) and Benz & Cie. Daimler was initially more successful in international marketing than Benz. In the following years, both inventors finally managed to successfully market their products in both Europe and North America. In June 1926, the Daimler engine society and Benz & Cie merged with Daimler-Benz AG. today Mercedes-Benz. In the 1930s, the company finally made the final breakthrough in the truck business.

Growth despite the oil crisis

In the 1950s, the group equipped all its trucks with diesel engines. In addition to the expansion of the European sales network and the stronger internationalization of production, the group increased its product range in the field of commercial vehicles. This included transporters and heavy trucks in particular. Examples are the Mercedes-Benz L 3250 or the Unimog built since 1951. Despite the oil crisis in 1973, the traditional group was able to continue the upward trend in both the car sector and in the truck area in the 1970s. According to the group, the purchases of heavy truck manufacturers Euclid (1977) and Freightliner (1981) have also contributed to consolidating the leading position in the automotive industry. In 1993, Daimler-Benz AG started a cooperation with the US Detroit Diesel Corporation with the aim of developing, production and sales of a diesel engine for heavy trucks and buses. The cooperation ended with the takeover of Detroit Diesel Corporation in 2000.

Daimler Truck share: electromobility and split off from the parent company

Since the 2000s, electromobility in particular has developed into an important business area for the Daimler Group. At the Tokyo Motor Show 2017, Daimler Truck announced that they want to fully electrify all of the Fuso brand and bus series in the next few years. Thomas Built Buses – subsidiary of Daimler Truck North America – presented the first fully electric school bus.

One of the most important milestones in the history of Daimler Truck was probably the split from the parent company Daimler. The shareholders of Daimler AG voted at a virtual extraordinary general meeting in October 2021 with a “outstanding majority” for the realignment of the group and the spin -off of Daimler Truck. The shareholders also voted to list the Daimler Truck Holding AG as an independent company on the Frankfurt securities exchange. The renaming of Daimler AG into Mercedes-Benz Group AG on February 1, 2022 was also part of this realignment. This is intended to illustrate the focus on cars and vans of the brands Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach and Mercedes-EQ.

In 2023, the now independent company introduced the Rizon brand on the US market. The moderate trucks (class 4 and 5) represent three fully electric models and were presented to the public for the first time on the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Anaheim (California, USA). The commercial vehicle manufacturer is taking another step towards electromobility and innovation.
