Germany's Sydney Wüstling at the Biathlon World Championships in the Bavarian Forest

As of: March 4, 2026 • 4:00 p.m

Sydney Wüstling won Germany’s second medal at the Biathlon Junior World Championships on Arber in the Bavarian Forest. She came third in the junior sprint.

Latvia’s Estere Volfa won gold in the 7.5 kilometer sprint. The 20-year-old, who achieved three top-20 finishes at the Winter Olympics in Italy, finished 53.9 seconds faster than second-place finisher Inka Hamalainen from Finland. The 20-year-old biathlete from Kontiolahti, where the World Cup is taking place this weekend, has, like Volfa, already gained a lot of experience in the top biathlon league.

A further 13.3 seconds behind, Wüstling secured the bronze medal. For the only 17-year-old, who could also compete in the youth class, it is the greatest success of her young career. She left numerous World Cup-experienced athletes behind her. The second best German was Johanna Lehnung in seventh place (0 penalties/+1:35.1 minutes).

Libertine very quickly in the “deep sand”

Already after warming up, libertine had “extremely keen to run the race”. Even if the underground instead of one “really nice and hard” Stretch now suddenly “deep sand” was, “It happened by itself.” But at the shooting range she realized that maybe it was “was a bit fast” and hoped “that everything goes well”. She got through well with only one mistake and was tied with Volfa at this point.

Even during the second shooting, she remained calm despite the initial situation. Your motto: “I’ve trained so hard to stand here and shoot zero. Now just do it!” On the final lap she lost some time to the leader, but was able to be happy about her place on the podium.

Gaupp and Dietersberger with too many mistakes

A total of four German athletes took part in the race. Leni Dietersberger crossed the finish line in 30th place with two penalties, 3:22.6 minutes behind. Melina Gaupp finished ten positions behind (3/+4:03.5 mins).

Preuss on Friday Sports show microphone

The mass start races continue on Arber on Friday. The juniors take to the track first at 10:30 a.m., followed by the junior women at 11:30 a.m. Both races are available again in the Sportschau live stream. Then Franziska Preuß will be there as a co-commentator. The overall World Cup winner from the previous season ended her career a few days ago after the Winter Olympics.

No medal in the youth sprint

The young people took to the track four hours before the juniors. There, the Slovakian Michaela Strakova was able to secure the gold medal after two shooting events and six kilometers of cross-country skiing. Behind her, Hanna Voelstad (Norway) and Selina Ganner (Austria) landed on the other podium places. The best German was Katharina Staller in eighth place (2/+1:26.0 mins). Giovanna Nicolussi came twelfth (2/+1:34.7 mins), Ina Lickert (1/+1:56.9 mins) and Leonie Hinterstoisser (2/+2:27.7 mins) landed in positions 21 and 31.
