Public broadcaster Ongehoord Nederland is under heavy fire because many people find the broadcasts extremely racist. It is one specific fragment in particular that many people find uncomfortable (see below). The controversy was briefly discussed yesterday in the talk show HLF8, where Britt Dekker was asked for her opinion.

‘Racist wappies’

Britt thinks that such a broadcaster does not belong in the public system at all. “I sometimes think wappies are funny, but if they become racist wappies, then I just think it doesn’t belong on the NPO. I’ve seen it. It is of course not possible.”

Those people must be removed from the NPO channels as soon as possible, according to the presenter. “It does not belong on the NPO. I don’t think it belongs anywhere, but not at all with public broadcasting. I think everyone agrees, right?”

To ban or not to ban?

Maxim Hartman, who sits across from Britt, believes that people with these kinds of ideas should simply have a stage. “Apparently there are a number of people who think this is a good broadcaster and have signed: ‘I support you.’ Why not give those kinds of people a platform to make themselves heard?”

He does not seem to be in favor of removing Ongehoord Nederland from the system. “It is beyond dispute that it is punishable and tasteless, but I wonder whether you should immediately ban the entire broadcaster.”

Britt very irritated

According to Maxim, it is obvious that it is a tasteless broadcaster. “I also think it’s terrible that millions a year go to such a group of people who think this is quality TV, but the AvroTros makes Feest op het Muziekplein and I also think it’s outrageous that tax money goes to it.”

Britt doesn’t think that’s a funny comment. She bites him seriously: “You can joke about that, but racism is something different from Frans Bauer.”

Maxim again: “That is even worse, I agree with you, but it is up to the law to see whether that is punishable, because I think Muziekplein op het Feest is just as bad as racism.”

“You don’t say this!”

Then presenter Leonie ter Braak intervenes immediately. “Hey, don’t use that word, Maxim.”

Max: “Why not?”

Britt: “You really can’t say that. That’s not humor anymore. Racism is never possible, can it?”

Maxim: “It is not intended as humor. The tasteless things you see on TV can also be critically examined.”

Leonie stern: “Certainly, but I also find throwing words that have to do with diseases that people die from or that make people very sad. I just want to say that with this one.”
