Eva Lys missed the round of 16 at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. The Hamburg woman clearly defeated Jasmine Paolini. Jule Niemeier won the duel with Laura Siegemund.
For Germany’s number one Eva Lys, the 500 tournament has already ended after a defeat against the two-time Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini. Lys had to give up against the Italian after only 65 minutes with 2: 6, 1: 6. The world ranking list was one size too big for the Hamburg native, who had surprisingly moved into the round of 16 at the Australian Open.
Already in the first set Paolini gave her opponent a chance and won a quick 6: 2 set win. The second sentence was even clearer for the Italian with 6: 1. Lys missed to take care of the next German duel – instead of her, Paolini now meets Niemeier in the round of 16.
Niemeier wins German German Duel against victory
The 25-year-old from Dortmund had previously won the emotional German duel with Laura Siegemund. Due to the hard-fought 4: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4, Niemeier moved into the round of 16 of the 500 tournament despite a break behind. The first time it was on profile veline that the two were facing each other.
After a complicated start, Niemeier took over control of the game in the second round with solid basic strokes – although she continued to reveal problems with her serve. In the decision set, the Dortmundian first had to hand in her serve, but she fought back. At 4: 4, she initially left a huge break chance on the network, but used the next to the preliminary decision – after more than three hours of play, never converted her third match ball and even had to push some tears.
“I stayed tuned all the time and just played. Tennis is sometimes not so easy and I’m glad that I have a team behind me that always stands by me. That is very good,” she said afterwards. Last week the opponents started as teammates at the Billie Jean King Cup. Against the Netherlands and Great Britain, the DTB team remained without chance in the qualification for the final round in autumn. “It was difficult because Laura and I talked a lot about my tactics last week, but I am very happy that I could win the match,” said Niemeier.
