Wouter (42) served with the Marine Corps in the ‘lean years’: ‘Freedom is now seriously under pressure, I would go again’

The Dutch defense had to scrape everything together for years; The stories about soldiers who call ‘pang’ mushes, instead of firing with real ammunition, many are still alive. In retrospect, sports instructor Wouter van Driel was in the wrong time at the Marine Corps, he thinks. The cuts and no prospects of a broadcast made him chose Defense for civilian life after 6.5 years. But if it were necessary to defend our freedom, he would be in active service again.
