World Poetry Day: 100 years of the first book of poems by Jorge Luis Borges

The agenda for the anniversary of Tuesday, March 21, International poetry day, includes the presentation “Buenos Aires Fervor”the emblematic book of poems by the writer Jorge Luis Borges, celebrating its centenary. The event, which recalls the poetic stage of the Argentine author, will be held in Culture Station ParkLieutenant General Juan Perón 3326, from 6 to 10 pm and will feature talks, readings and music.

In the first edition of the book published in 1923, Borges included 46 poems that describe the streets, the suburbs, the neighborhoods of Recoleta and Villa Urquiza, and spaces such as the Botanical Garden, Plaza San Martín and the Recoleta Cemetery, among others. By way of gratitude and on the 100th anniversary of his work, the Ministry of Culture of the City will carry out “Fervour, festival of poetry”, driven by the General Directorate for the Promotion of Books, Libraries and Culture. The proposals will continue throughout April with days in which debate tables, writing workshops and artistic programming will come together.

“100 years ago the streets of each neighborhood in Buenos Aires were immortalized in the words of Jorge Luis Borges. It is an honor for each one of the citizens of the City, and for that reason we are going to pay a tribute to him in a big way. We invite you to remember, reread and honor him at the Poetry Festival together with the best contemporary writers and intellectuals”, he expressed. The head of the City government, who wrote the prologue; the Minister of Culture of the City, Enrique Avogadro; the director of Cultural and Creative Development, Mora Scillamá; the essayist, critic and translator, Pablo Gianera; journalist and literary critic, Maximilian Thomas; Argentine journalist, writer and essayist, Beatrice Sarlo, together with texts by other renowned figures. The book’s foreword and introduction will be available for digital download on the web.

In turn, the day will feature the table “The birth of a writer: Borges and the fervor of the 20s” in which you will participate Maria Negroni With Luis Chitarroniand will moderate Pablo Gianera and Maximiliano Tomás. There will also be a poetry reading by Julian Lopez and Daniel Liparaand a musical closing of Loli Molina.

International poetry day

On the second date of the Festival, which will take place on Saturday, April 1, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., there will be new tables on “Fervor de Buenos Aires” in Cultura Parque de la Estación, moderated by Pablo Gianera and Maximiliano Tomas: “A book without a definitive version: corrections and editions of Fervor de Buenos Aires”, by Sebastián Hernaiz and Fabián Casas, it will take place at 4:00 p.m.; “Borges, the forgotten poet? A contemporary reading by Carlos Battilana and Matías Moscardi, will begin at 5:00 p.m., “Norah Borges: the imagined city”, by Gonzalo Aguilar and Javier Moscarola, will be offered at 6:00 p.m. and “Elegy to the city of the shores and ode to the city that is born: Borges against Oliverio Girondo”by Beatriz Sarlo and Carlos Bernatek, will close at 7:00 p.m.

In parallel, creative writing workshops will be held in the library classroom by Carolina Esses, Marina Mariasch and Flavia Calise. On the other hand, in the amphitheater there will be artistic programming with “Astrology in Borges and Xul Solar”, by Gael P. Rossi; poetry reading by Olivia Milberg, Tomás Litta, Inés Ripari, Marico Carmona, Natalia Romero and Magalí Etchebarne; “Love, philosophy and poetry”talk by Vir Cano, and as a closing a musical show of Lucy Patane.
