The extent of the destruction can still be clearly seen on the toboggan and bobsleigh run at Königssee. The new World Cup season actually starts in two weeks, but the track cannot be used this winter either. The green light has now been given for reconstruction. The train could be ready again by the end of 2024.

On July 18, 2021, numerous landslides occurred due to heavy rainfall. A mudflow had spilled parts of the toboggan run. The start house and the upper part of the track are still destroyed and have to be rebuilt.

Return possible at the end of 2024

“If everything goes well and if this measure that we are planning fits into the overall concept, then it could be that we could go on the ice at the end of 2024,” says Thomas Schwab, Chairman of the Bobsleigh and Sled Association (BSD). optimistic.

Until then, it will mainly affect them young athleteswho used the Königssee track as a training route. They currently have to switch to Innsbruck, from where they regularly return home by bus late in the evening.

Conversion at the start house and environmentally friendly use of the track

The upper part of the web is most affected. The start house will have to be rebuilt, further to the left and slightly down the slope. In addition, the new toboggan run should also meet today’s environmental standards, says BSD board member Alexander Resch: “In the time of the energy crisis, you can’t expect anyone to take a cold shower, to freeze in the apartment, and we squander it power back there without doing our part.” The entire system should therefore be operated in a CO2-neutral manner.
