“Football” or “Soccer”? US President Donald Trump has his own view of the two sports. A strange moment occurs during the World Cup group draw.
US President Donald Trump has caused a stir with unusual statements about soccer and American football. The 79-year-old spoke out in favor of rearranging the terms “football” and “soccer” in the USA.
Trump said on Friday at FIFA’s group draw for the upcoming World Cup that it “really doesn’t make sense” that the sport known as “football” in the United States is actually rarely played with the foot. At the same time, the sport in which the ball is moved almost exclusively with the foot is called “soccer” in the United States.
“We have a little problem with another thing called football – but if you think about it, it shouldn’t really be called football, there’s no question about that,” Trump said, referring to American football. He added: “We need to find another name for the NFL.” He did not mention a suggestion.
Trump had already publicly stated in the summer that he was thinking about possibly renaming the two sports. At that time he emphasized that he could even sign a corresponding decree. However, this has not yet happened.
The World Cup takes place from June 11th to July 19th. The hosts are the USA, Mexico and Canada.
