What does … actually do? was once a great column in the “kicker”. Not available any more. Too bad. For years, the question “What does Sunday Oliseh actually do?” must be answered truthfully with “I have no idea” or speculatively with “shoot free kicks from 38 meters”.
Then came the news that Sunday Oliseh would become a coach at SV Straelen. The club became a little known in the summer because the president is married to national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg.
Sunday Oliseh as coach of SV Straelen
By the time Sunday Oliseh got to know the club from the district of Kleve on the Dutch border, he was fired again. In between, he had FC St. Pauli on the hook in the DFB Cup, but lost.
Even with a new coach, SV Straelen is bottom of the table in the Regionalliga West, but on Saturday they managed a respectable win: 0-0 against SV Rödinghausen.
From Straelen to Qatar
The game was just in the second half when the news broke what Sunday Oliseh is doing now. He is a member of the “FIFA Technical Study Group” for the World Cup. From Straelen to Qatar. That’s a career leap. Before anyone asks the obvious question of what Faryd Mondragon actually does, he’s also in the study group.
The result of the group is already known. It will be the best World Cup ever – “of course”, as Gianni Infantino added – and the sporting aspect has to correlate with the surroundings, of course.
99 minutes
Friedensengel Infantino not only predicted the very best World Cup of all time, but also the “biggest show on earth”. Everyone thought they meant the football tournament that is actually starting now.
But the biggest show on earth is already over. It was the press conference with the FIFA President himself. The number lasted 99 minutes, and in almost every second of it they must have asked in Straelen: Wtf is Gianni Infantino actually doing?
