World Cup decision made by Alphonso Davies

Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies is finally fit for Canada’s first World Cup game in 36 years.

According to national coach John Herdmann, the 22-year-old winger has fully recovered from a torn muscle fibre.

“Canada is able to send its best team onto the field. Fonzie is fit,” Herdman said in Doha before Wednesday’s game against Belgium (8 p.m. / ARD and MagentaTV). “It’s great to see him with a big smile on his face again.”

It is Canada’s first World Cup game since 1986. “The players should enjoy it,” said Herdman, who previously coached Canada’s women’s team at World Cups.

“We are in very good shape to play against any team in the world,” said Besiktas captain Atiba Hutchinson.
